Some Thoughts for the Music Student

I have some encouraging thoughts this week for the music student. Once in a while, we all need someone to remind us to be brave and perseverant in our work. Here are some helpful thoughts you can refer to when you need positivity.

To become an accomplished musician, your experience must be abundant in music. Actively pursue bettering your skills and play and perform in different settings. A well-balanced program will do good and help you refine your skills; you will significantly benefit from varying your repertoire by playing other genres, performing solos, and in chamber music ensembles and orchestras.

Make your program varied to brighten your playing and achieve brilliance. Commitment is vital. Be committed to your art and cherish every moment you play. Audiences will react differently each time, and people might tear up after an excellent performance. They will surprise you and tell you how much you touched their hearts. Accept compliments with humility and grace.

Be daring in your efforts, and devote yourself diligently to improving your skills and presenting the best performance possible. Educate yourself and establish a solid repertoire appropriate to your specific instrument.

Listen to experienced performers who are masters in their art. Experiment with different techniques, practice routines, and explore. Be fearless and remain fair if you were ever in a position to evaluate someone’s playing. Express your genuine feelings, and do not act out fake emotions. The listener will know, and they can tell.

Practice with a happy heart to harvest the fruits of your labor. When appropriate, appreciate humor, good humor.

Be inquisitive and industrious, practice independence. Don’t expect your teacher to repeat things so many times until you remember them. Intensify your practice sessions when you can without acquiring unnecessary physical discomfort. Do that gradually to avoid overwhelm.

Join musical groups, write about your progress, and brainstorm in your journal what you think you need to work on. Be knowledgeable about the history of music and literature; it is vast, so dive deep into it.

Play with love in your heart and don’t forget laughter. Marvel at the work created by prominent composers and always be musical. Play each note with care. Nurture your soul by playing every day, don’t abandon your playing, your instrument.

Exercise open-mindedness by being open to playing music from different periods. Be patient with yourself as long as you put the required time into your playing. Be proud of who you are and act quickly when there are opportunities, including always being ready.

Reward yourself occasionally when things are tough and you have been working hard. Take care of yourself and stay strong when things get tough. Be tenacious, tranquil, and treasure the moments you have with your instrument.

Do your utmost for your playing, value your moments, and wholeheartedly embrace your musical life. Don’t be a Xerox copy of someone else’s playing; find your path. And yield when someone else makes a good point. Be flexible. And show the world how zealous you are when playing your instrument.
